GLEAMING TREASURE

It’s good to see talks emerging between newly crowned Light welterweight Champion Adrien Broner and Ashley Theophane.

A few years ago, there was talk of Zab Judah v Theophane but that fight never happened.

Should the Broner fight be confirmed, conventional wisdom would suggest a Broner win but the sport of boxing has a way of disregarding conventional wisdom, which is one of the beauties of boxing.

I remember promoting Ashley in his earlier fights and he has always had the ability to go very far in boxing.

The Broner fight would be challenging but it’s a fight that he can win. Few boxing writers expected Theophane to last the distance against Danny Garcia for the vacant International Boxing organisation welterweight title but he surprised them with a split decision loss, which could have gone either way.

Broner is not the force he once was expected to be and is in a weight division with very talented opposition.

Ashley has won his last 6 bouts whereas, Broner has lost 2 of his last 6! We have to remember it is only 6 fights ago that he was knocked down and beaten quite badly in the Maidana fight and I’m not quite sure if he has regained the confidence that he had before that.

Should Theophane pull off the win, which I think he can, there will be a line of fights and challengers waiting for him.

Boxing fans will remember me live on Sky Sports television predicting an early Danny Williams ko of Mike Tyson.
